Astaxanthin has antioxidant properties that provide the majority of its health benefits such as improved blood flow, increased energy levels, a lower rate of oxidative (toxin) damage to cells, DNA and cell protection by neutralizing oxidants; reduced growth of cancer cells, and a stronger immune system that better protects cells in the brain and eyes [6-11]. Astaxanthin supplementation also appears to boost the body's absorption of fatty acids (omega-3), which increases mental and physical endurance [10]. Healthy levels of omega 3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) support cognitive functions such as memory, focus, motivation, etc., and enhanced energy, while low omega 3 fatty acid levels are linked to mental fatigue [1-3]. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids improve age-related eye problems, support heart health, promote optimal cholesterol levels, and enhance mental health through its ability to help protect against dementia and age-related cognitive issues, and it targets depression, inattentiveness, and hyperactivity [1- 4].
Supporting health and normal brain function, eye health and normal vision, healthy stress levels and good moods, healthy cholesterol levels
Polyunsaturated fat such as omega-3 fatty acids help target inflammation as well as damage to eye cells that could lead to macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome [1-3]. The body cannot produce these types of essential acids on its own. In addition, omega fatty acids have neuroprotective properties that protect brain cells from different types of damage [4, 5].
Astaxanthin demonstrates potent antioxidant activity that supports cell membrane activity by protecting it from free radical and oxidative damage due to its ability to neutralize oxidants, this property helps enhance immune system's ability to ward of illness-causing agents that can damage brain cells or eye cells [6]. In addition, it boosts the body's ability to use fatty acids (omega-3), which helps protect tissue throughout the body at the cellular level [9]. Furthermore, it improves arterial wall thickness, thereby enhancing blood flow to organs such as the brain [10]. It has anti-inflammatory properties that support overall health [11].
