Research indicates that measuring ketone levels and glucose levels through the blood is the most accurate form of measurement in comparison to using a breath analyzer or performing urinalysis testing [1, 2].
Blood ketone and blood glucose testing [1, 2]
Blood ketone and blood glucose concentrations are measured using the electrochemical capillary blood monitor device (Precision Xtra) with the corresponding individually foil-wrapped test strips for hydroxybutyrate (BHB), which is a marker for ketogenesis and changes in blood glucose levels. Each test strip contains three electrodes (working, reference, and fill trigger) and the test is automatically initiated upon the application of enough blood (0.6 microliter) [1]. The finger should be cleaned and dried before it is pricked. The single-use lancing devices have three depth settings. After the test strip is inserted into the device, a drop of blood is applied to the assigned spot and the BHB and blood glucose concentrations are read from the display and recorded.

How to monitor blood glucose: 1. Prepare your lancing device. 2. Wash your hands and the test site using warm soapy water and dry them completely. 3. Open the foil test strip packet at the notch and tear down to remove the test strip. 4. With the contact bars (3 black lines) facing up, insert the test strip into the strip port. 5. Push the test strip in until it stops. 6. The meter turns on automatically. 7. These items show on the display window, one after the other: Time, month, and day (if set). If date and time are not set, dashes will show instead of numbers. 8. LOT 45001 and the Apply Sample symbols, indicating that the meter is ready for you to apply blood to the blood glucose test strip. 9. Before you obtain a blood sample from the fingertip, forearm, upper arm, or base of the thumb, make sure the sample site is clean, dry, and warm. To warm the sample site, wash it in warm water, rub the skin vigorously for a few seconds, or apply a warm pad to it. 10. Hang your arm down before pricking your finger or the base of the thumb to help blood flow. 11. Prick the finger with the lancing device and apply the blood sample to the test strip immediately.
