Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is an essential nutrient that is well known for its ability to support strong, vibrant skin (scalp) and hair [1-4]. Consuming biotin regularly helps prevent the occurrence of scalp irritation and hair loss [4, 5]. Saw Palmetto and Beta-sitosterol (Pygeum extract) target a substance that is associated with hair loss known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) [6-8]. B vitamins support the immune system and red blood cell health, which is essential for hair rejuvenation, and B vitamins also improve the body's response to stress [9, 10]. Selenium helps target a weak immune system, infections, and inflammatory problems that can affect the scalp and hair follicles; while zinc also boosts immunity and supports moist, vibrant skin [11]. Vitamin E (as alpha Tocopheryl succinate) has powerful antioxidant properties that help promote skin health [12]. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that penetrates the membrane of cells throughout the body, thereby boosting the health of skin, bone, tendon, and muscle cells as well as immune system function [12]. Lycopene is a potent antioxidant that improves the body's ability to protects cells in the body (e.g., skin and scalp) from damage [13].

Biotin boosts metabolism and functions as a co-enzyme that enhances the breakdown of proteins, carbohydrates, fats (fatty acids) and other nutrients that nourish the hair [1-5]. Fatty acids in particular, strengthen the protective outer layer of the body's cells, including those that make up hair follicles [5]. Therefore, biotin promotes healthy hair growth by ensuring that vital nutrients are released from food and properly transported throughout the body (e.g. scalp and hair follicles). A hormonal imbalance may cause certain enzymes such as 5-alpha-reductase may begin to convert testosterone in both men and women into a stronger substance called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Increased DHT levels leads to the accumulation of a thick, dandruff-like substance called sebum. Sebum can clog the roots of the scalp, which can subsequently disrupt nutrient transport to the scalp and hair follicles, hair loss. Beta-sitosterol (Pygeum extract) and Saw Palmetto block DHT activity, thereby preventing the buildup of sebum and hair loss [6-8]. B vitamins play a role in numerous biological processes, they support the growth and development of red blood cells, they also promote oxygen delivery to various parts of the body including the scalp and hair follicles [9, 10]. Selenium maximizes the activity of an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which acts as an antioxidant [11]. Zinc promotes growth and development of cells throughout the body (e.g. scalp and hair follicles), and it also improves immune system function [11]. Vitamin E (as alpha Tocopheryl succinate) has anti-inflammatory, skin-smoothing, and photo-protecting properties, it helps the outer layer of the skin maintain its moisture, and it accelerates wound healing on the skin (e.g., scalp) [12]. Vitamin C acts directly upon collagen metabolism by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin fibers in various areas of the body including the skin (e.g., scalp) [12]. Lycopene's powerful antioxidant properties target damage caused by free radicals (toxins) and in doing so, helps protect cells in the scalp and hair follicles [13]. This subsequently supports hair growth.
