The company's success dates back to the 1980s, when scientist first discovered the benefits of minoxidil for hair regrowth. Scientists began studying the use of topical minoxidil for scalp health and this led to years of innovations that facilitated the manufacture of numerous Rogaine products which effectively target hair loss and boost hair growth.
Minoxidil has been used for male pattern hair loss and androgenic alopecia for several decades due to its ability to stimulate hair follicle cells, which reduces hair loss and enhancing hair growth [1, 2].
Thinning hair, hair loss, and hair regrowth in men [1, 2]
Minoxidil research comparing 2% and 5% solutions demonstrated that treatment led to an increase in the DNA synthesis of hair bulbs, which indicates that Minoxidil stimulates secondary hair follicle cell growth and causes a rapid shift in the hair growth phase [1, 2]. Most men who use rogaine 5% notice results in 12 to 24 weeks [1, 2].

Topical minoxidil is generally considered safe; however, some patients experience side effects after application. The most common side effect of Minoxidil is irritant contact dermatitis with some symptoms of itching and scaling. The number if people who have this issue is lower with 2% MS than it is with 5% MS. Allergic contact dermatitis can also occur because of PG or minoxidil itself. A patch test should be performed to determine the causative agents. Although an allergic reaction to minoxidil could occur, it is infrequent. If patients are allergic to PG, the vehicles should be substituted with butylene glycol, glycerin, or polysorbate. Moreover, MF, a PG-free formula, should be prescribed instead and if the reactions persist, then allergy to minoxidil should be suspected. In this scenario, the use of all minoxidil preparations should be discontinued.
