Jessica created My Magic Mud for her daughter who had a condition that made her susceptible to cavities and tooth sensitivity. She tested several natural remedies including baking soda but landed on activated charcoal and saw huge improvements in the whitening of her daughter's teeth and cleansing of her mouth. My Magic Mud was born after friends asked for the powder to whiten their teeth as well.
Activated charcoal has been proven by an independent third party lab conducted by the company to remove stains thereby whitening teeth. Though external studies on activated charcoal are mixed. Some studies indicate that charcoal-based toothpaste has no negative impacts on oral health or even reduces the risk of cavities, while others suggest that charcoal in toothpaste causes enamel wear and increased risk of cavities[1-5]. Few studies so far besides the one done by My Magic Mud have reported any whitening effects from charcoal toothpaste, however customer reviews for this product show a lot of satisfied customers. My Magic Mud conducted a study that showed an improvement in whitening of participants' teeth in 21 days. 75% of the participants saw an improvement for their teeth for both the powder and toothpaste. However, participants saw more whitening effects in the powder than in the toothpaste.; Charcoal is a highly porous substance, able to absorb a variety of molecules. Activated charcoal, heated to a high degree so that it has especially large, absorbent pores, is used to treat cases of poisoning and to filter water. Those who advocate for using charcoal to clean teeth suggest that the charcoal is similarly able to absorb bacteria and chemicals in your mouth, keeping them from staining your teeth. The grit can also physically scrape buildup off of your teeth.
